Seasonal Decorating For Less
“Seasonal Decorating For Less”
was
our topic
during LIFT
on Wednesday
November 20.
Speaker Susan Penning |
Susan
Penning, creator of an inspirational and humorous frugal living
website shared budget-friendly decorating, organizing and home
improvement tips.
Visit her website
to learn more:
Here are 10 helpful tips Susan gave us:
- Don't Jump The Gun. Stores start to sell early, so stay away from these isles. You first need to get into the holiday stuff you already have. Figure out what you want to keep or get rid of. Then you're ready to shop. If you need motivation, buy one small item to put out (like a Christmas tea towel).
- Shop After Season Sales. You now have a vision of what your house looks like and you know what you need for next year.
- Shop the Cheapest Stores First. Often big department stores will have the same or similar items for much more than discount stores.
"Too much stuff makes it hard for you
and your family to focus on
the true meaning of the season. "
7. Think Locally. Go outside for pine cones, greens, etc. Buying locally, you will get a better/nicer selection that's often cheaper.
8. Use Your Decorations In A New Way. Spray paint can create a whole new look. Ornaments in a glass vase look nice too.
"Your decorations should work for more than one season." |
10. Make Seasonal Decor Do Double Duty. Your decorations should work for more than one season. Throw blankets, rugs, and pillows in reds and browns can go through fall and Christmas. Then you can focus on the season instead of worrying about changing decorations. This saves on storage as well.
Susan also provided us with a BONUS CRAFT!!
Thank you Susan!!

Susan
had painted the boards for us. We sanded the edges of the wood to
give an aged look.
Then
we put the glue on the board, placed the print on top of the glue,
and brushed more glue on top of the print! Dry. That's it!!

Pumpkin Craft
Little Stitching, Much Fall Décor
Each lady made a fabric pumpkin or two. With simple hand-stitching pumpkins of all shapes, size, and colors were made. All supplies were provided.
1. Choose Pumpkin
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
2. Plan: This May Seem Painful and Confusing
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
3. Clean Inside: The Inside is a Mess
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” Jeremiah 17:9
4. Put in Light
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5: 14-16
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” Ephesians 5:8
BE A VESSEL OF LIGHT FOR THE LORD

Vegetable Gardening Tips at May 15 LIFT
Gathering with friends at the final LIFT event of the season. |
Although we were not able to meet at the park due to rain and cold weather, we enjoyed our time together at the church.
"Year In Review" game! Congrats Lyndsay! |
Judy began the event with a fun “Year In Review” game. Contestants could use three life lines to help them answer questions about this past year.
How well would you have done? Some questions included:
1. In November, what kind of ideas did we share?
2. We were able to "Call Her (and him) Blessed" through the THIS project by supporting two children within Juniata county.
3. Who decorated for our Christmas brunch with fresh smelling greens and poinsettias?
3. Who decorated for our Christmas brunch with fresh smelling greens and poinsettias?
(1. Homemade Gifts, 2. Christmas Angel, 3. Maggie Shafferman 4. Two years)
We had our time of prayer and sharing.
Maggie Shafferman of Hunter's Run Nursery, gave vegetable gardening and pest control tips. |
Did you know there are 12 different soil types?
If you have clay soil, add organic material (compost, veggie scraps, grass clippings, leaves, and/or manure). Chicken and sheep manure are good to put on your gardens. It is best to put the manure on in the fall so it has time to decompose.
Did you know you should buy shorter veggie plants at the greenhouse?
Tall plants have been given more nitrogen. Shorter plants will not suffer as much from transplant shock.
Did you know the best time to water is from 6:00am-8:00am?
This is the best way to PREVENT DISEASES. When you water at night, you are helping to feed fungus that comes out at night. In the morning, plants are at their ready to grow point. But, water when your plants need it!!
When is the best time to plant your vegetables?
After May. Around a full moon. At this time, there would not be a threat of frost.
Our new LIFT year will begin on September 18.
Have a Safe and Fun Summer!!
